Pharmaceutics is the discipline of pharmacy that deals with all facets of the process of turning a new chemical entity into a medication able to be safely and effectively used by patients. It is the science of dosage from design. With all the necessary infrastructural facility and experienced faculty, department of pharmaceutics is actively engaged in the teaching and research of different subject areas of pharmaceutics like pharmaceutical technology, biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, physical pharmaceutics, industrial pharmacy and drug delivery system. The department has a machine room which possess a well built aura of machine generally encountered in pharmaceutical industries like 12 station Rotary Punching Machine, Pan Coater, Hand Operated Single Punch Machine, Dissolution Rate Test Apparatus (I.P Standard), Disintegration Rate Test Apparatus (U.S.P standard),ROPP Cap Bottle Sealing Machine, Ampoule filling and sealing machine, Mechanical and Gyratory filling Sieve Shaker, Filter Press, Reynolds Apparatus, Vacuum filter Unit, Friability Test Apparatus, Capsule filling machine, Mechanical Stirrer, Double and Cuboidal Cone Blender, Root crusher, Ointment filling machine, Ointment Crimping machine. The department also has a pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory is built with an insight into the biotechnology industry with instrument like B.O.D. Incubator, Aseptic Room with laminar air flow cabinet and U.V. Cabinet, Deep Freezer, digital Oven, Incubators, Double Door Ovens, Bacterial Colony Counter, Autoclaves etc.
Pharmaceutical chemistry is a discipline that deals with the designing, synthesis, identification, developing and analyzing New Chemical Entity {NCE}. This study helps to understand the action of drugs at molecular level. Modern approaches like quantitative structure activity relationship, computer aided drug design, high performance liquid chromatography, Gas chromatography, UV spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy etc. are used to study the chemical nature of drugs. The undergraduate students are allowed to carry out experiment individually in order to understand the nature and behavior of chemical reaction that drug molecules undergo.
The department is well equipped with the necessary apparatus, instrument and equipments to train the undergraduate and post graduate students in different chemical aspect of drugs like physical, analytical, organic, inorganic, biochemical, medicinal etc. There are the dedicated laboratories for undergraduate students and research labs for postgraduate students. Well qualified and experienced staff is the main highlight of this department.
The discipline of pharmacology deals with the studies related to interaction of drugs and living beings. The Department of Pharmacology provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for conducting high quality research and teaching. Students enrolled in undergraduate degrees are taught by the department in all the four years of their study. Collectively the department is committed to teaching practices. There is a strong and growing research environment in the Department of Pharmacology covering a range of research areas. The animal ethical committee set up on CPCSEA guideline owns an Animal House.
Giving all the necessary care & facilities for hygienic housing of laboratory animals like Wistar rats, Swiss Albino mice & rabbits required for study. The laboratory is well equipped with latest instruments like sterotaxic instrument, digital rat paw plethysmometer, digital rota-rod apparatus, digital elevated plus maze, electric convulsometer, digital analgesiometer, histamine chamber, digital swimming rate test apparatus etc. Others routinely required instruments like student's organ bath, Sherington's Kymograph, sphygmomanometers, haemometers & haemocytometers are present in good number for handling by undergraduate student.
Pharmacognosy is the study of physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs of natural origin. It also includes search for new drugs from natural sources. The department is substantially equipped with all the facilities that are required for extraction, isolation and analysis of natural products. A rich Drug Garden has been established and maintained that spreads over an area of 10,000 sq.ft. It has 65 different species of ‘Medicinal Plants' and is being transferred into a novel Field Laboratory.
The experienced staff of the department is involved in teaching undergraduate courses in Pharmacognosy. Natural Product & phytochemistry and Pharmaceutical Botany. The department is also serious involved in exploration of phytochemicals. Research and development activities based on identification, isolation & purification, structure elucidation, pharmacologic activity determination plant tissue culture of drugs from the natural origin are the main highlights of this department.
This is the newly established department of the Gurunanak College of Pharmacy. Quality assurance plays a vital part in the drug development, maintenance of quality of pharmaceuticals. It is the department which is responsible for ensuring that all the appropriate procedures have been followed and documented so that the quality of the product can be assured. The postgraduate course in quality assurance deals with the preparation of standard operating procedures, validation of pharmaceutical processes, cleaning of equipments, study of good manufacturing practices and good laboratory practices, recent analytical method for the quality control of pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products, total quality management for ensuring the quality environment throughout. The department has research laboratories that are well equipped with sophisticated instruments and equipments. The department has experienced staff with exceptional qualifications.
